I’ve heard this saying my whole life. I’m not entirely sure I knew that this saying came from scripture though. I just thought it was one of those sayings that older folk would say. Growing up in a church of primarily older folk, I became well educated in the “ole sayings” & now that I’m older I realize how much wisdom these sayings hold. At the time though, I had no idea what any of it meant.
“if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise”
“don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched”
“many hands make light work”
“you’ll catch more flies with honey than vinegar”
“the early bird gets the worm”
“you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink”
“when the going gets tough, the tough get going”
“you’ll reap what you sow”
I guess I always just thought it meant- if you do bad things, bad things will come to you & if you do good things, good things will come to you. But there is a greater takeaway that I’ve come to realize.
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Galatians 6:7-19
Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity
Proverbs 22:8
But you have planted wickedness,
Hosea 10:13
you have reaped evil,
you have eaten the fruit of deception.
Because you have depended on your own strength
While it’s obvious that if we sow bad things, we will reap bad things, there is a greater lesson to be learned here.
God’s mercy.
Thank God that we don’t have to always reap what we sow! It is because of God’s mercy that we can have a home in heaven, despite our sin, because of Jesus!
Jesus reaped our punishment on the cross & when we place our trust in Him, we reap eternal life!
He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
Titus 3:5
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
