Christian Kryptonite

Unbelief to God is like kryptonite to Superman.

& unbelief ultimately separates us from God.

I know many will disagree with these statements & protest that God has no weakness or limitation & I understand where they are coming from, I do.

I believe that too!

There is nothing my God cannot do. I believe His will be done despite unbelief.

But I wholeheartedly believe, based off what the scripture says, that our lack of faith or unbelief is a barrier that blocks the Spirit from moving & ultimately separates us from God – if we do not believe in Jesus, what He accomplished at the cross, & that God raised Him from the dead, we are eternally separated from God. If we do not accept Jesus as the Messiah & believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we will not be saved.

Belief in Jesus is the only way to God & that same belief in Jesus enables the Spirit to move through us in our daily lives.

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do…

John 14:12

Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.

Matthew 17:20

And there are SO MANY examples in scripture to back this up!

Here are a few that really stand out to me & that I reference often:

The woman who had suffered terribly from severe bleeding for twelve years:

26 even though she had been treated by many doctors. She had spent all her money, but instead of getting better she got worse all the time. 27 She had heard about Jesus, so she came in the crowd behind him, 28 saying to herself, “If I just touch his clothes, I will get well.”

29 She touched his cloak, and her bleeding stopped at once; and she had the feeling inside herself that she was healed of her trouble. 30 At once Jesus knew that power had gone out of him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

Jesus said to her, “My daughter, your faith has made you well.

Mark 5:35-43

Peter walking on water with Jesus:

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:28-31

Jairus’s Daughter:

Jairus came to Jesus to ask for help for his daughter who was near death. People came to tell Jairus to not waste Jesus’ time because his daughter had died.

Jesus paid no attention to what they said, but told him, “Don’t be afraid, only believe.” Mark 5:36

Jesus, Peter, James and John go to his house and Jesus is like why is everyone crying? She isn’t dead, just asleep.

They all laugh at him and make fun of him and so Jesus sends them on out of the house (gotta get rid of that unbelief) and only Peter, James, John, and the girls’ parents are allowed in the room.

I personally believe that because they laughed at him and made fun of him for saying she was only asleep; they clearly didn’t believe what he was saying or that he could help. & thus were a barrier for a miracle.

Jesus couldn’t perform many miracles in his hometown:

And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief. Matthew 13:53-58

The son possessed with a demon that the disciples couldn’t help:

14And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, 15“Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.”

17Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.

19Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”

20So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:14-21

I think it is important to also share the same account as recorded in Mark which adds some more details:

20 Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth.

21 So He (Jesus) asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?”

And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” Mark 9:14-29

In my opinion, all of these examples are Jesus showing us that our unbelief separates us from God. Unbelief is the “kryptonite” that restricts God from moving & working.

The main point is: Yes, God has the power to do ANYTHING.

BUT

Will God reconcile us to himself without our belief?

According to scripture, No.

We are saved by grace through FAITH.

Because He gave us freewill, it is up to us to decide.

Believe & be reconciled with God.

Or don’t believe & be separated from God forever.

*Belief in Jesus is the only way to God & that same belief in Jesus enables the Spirit to move through us in our daily lives.*

When you pray, do you believe that your prayer will be answered? or do you fear & question whether God will hear you or be willing to answer your prayer or wonder if it will work into His will.

Just. Believe.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

John 14:12-14

I rebuke the fear & doubt that the enemy uses to cause unbelief or “kryptonite”.

Help my unbelief, Lord.

In the name of Jesus, Amen!
